The UK government is introducing a Digital Information and Smart Data Bill (DISD), distinct from the previous government’s failed Data Protection and Digital Information Bill in several ways. The new government has abandoned the previous government’s attempt to water down the UK’s Data Protection Act.

The DISD Bill enables innovative uses of data to facilitate growth in the economy in a smoother and more secure way, modernising public services, as well as giving the ICO new and stronger powers. The government has also proposed updating the UK’s existing cyber security legislative framework with the introduction of a new Cyber Security and Resilience Bill, and to place requirements on those working to develop the most powerful AI models. The lack of proposed legislation for AI has led to criticism of the new government’s unpreparedness to tackle AI’s dual-edged potential.
