From A Company to B Corp and beyond
Pre B Corp
TIAA’s workforce believe that the company is unique. TIAA’s business model has been centred on supporting improvement in the value gained from every pound spent on public services in the UK. This is something that has helped attract and retain the fantastic professionals employed today. TIAA is proud to be certified by ‘Green Dragon’ since 2013 and dedicated to maintaining this as part of its sustainable business model, as well as meeting all the relevant legal requirements. Being a B Corp shows more clearly TIAA’s commitment to its workforce, customers, shareholders and the environment.
Understanding B Corp
B Lab, a global non-profit group, awards the B Corp certification to for-profit companies that demonstrate high standards of social and environmental performance, accountability, and transparency. TIAA has earned this certification by scoring 94.6 on the B Impact Assessment, making a legal pledge to weigh the impact of their decisions on all stakeholders (not just shareholders), and being transparent about their results against B Lab’s criteria. B Corps are part of a movement for a more inclusive, fair, and sustainable economy. They aim to build trust with consumers, communities, and suppliers, attract and keep employees, and appeal to investors who share their mission. B Corps must renew their certification every three years, which motivates them to constantly improve and sustain their long-term resilience. The certification is comprehensive and not limited to a single social or environmental issue. It requires companies to involve teams across the company and can include documentation, review of public complaints, and possible site visits. B Corp certification is regarded as the highest standard of better business practices and reflects the most socially responsible companies.
Why be a B Corp?
As a company that already strives to be environmentally and socially conscious of its impact, the B Corp certification shows quantifiable values.
- Encouraging social responsibility: It holds the company accountable for social and environmental responsibility, which is increasingly important to consumers.
- Attracting like-minded employees: The certification can attract top talent who are looking for meaningful careers and validates the company’s employee-centric culture.
- Cost savings: B Corp status can lead to cost savings by providing access to community data on sustainable practices and identifying wasteful spending.
- Building trust: Certification builds trust with consumers, communities, and suppliers.
- Enhancing reputation: It can enhance the company’s reputation with consumers and make the company more attractive in the job market.
- Legal protection: It provides legal protection for the company’s mission and values over the long term.
- Attracting investors: B Corps can attract impact investors who are interested in supporting companies with a positive social and environmental impact.
These benefits can contribute to TIAA’s overall success and sustainability, aligning profit with purpose.
