European Union officials have reached a provisional deal on the world’s first comprehensive laws to regulate the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).
After 36 hours of talks, negotiators agreed rules around AI in systems such as ChatGPT, facial recognition, and the use of AI by law enforcement organisations.
“The EU becomes the very first continent to set clear rules for the use of AI,” Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton posted on X. “The [AI Act] is much more than a rulebook — it’s a launchpad for EU startups and researchers to lead the global AI race”, he added.
The European Parliament will vote on the AI Act proposals early next year for legislation which will take effect from 2025.
